I was glad to have today off - I spent it with Heather. I maintain that one of the best ways to spend a day is with your best friend. Brian, Heather and I had a blast, or perhaps a blitz, or perhaps a bit of both last night, and I actually drank seriously for the first time. I've yet to figure out if I was drunk or not, but at any rate, we had fun - just talking, laughing, drinking, and hanging out and being silly. We stayed up late, then fell asleep and slept until somewhere around 11:30 this morning. Heather and I opted to quest (well, we quested at my request!) for my desire this year: a B3 Shearling Bomber Jacket. We planned on hitting up the Army/Navy surplus store in Plano - lo and behold, they're closed Monday and Tuesday. So we went towards my work, in the hopes that either Tim (Tim C., not to be confused with Tim D., who I can't get along with) would know where another store was, or the phone book would tell us. Both sources of information told us the same thing - there's another surplus store on Rt 34 in Downer's Grove. We got a little lost, and sort of ended up blowing a tollbooth due to lack of change and only having 2 dollar bills and 22 cents. No fear! I sent in the payment already, so no tickets for the Jen. Heather and I ended up at this really scary Subway in a nice part of town trying to get tollway change, and had an incident with an accented man working there: "We cannot charge you a dollar for the cookie!" Strange and amusing, yet disturbing. We scampered off in search of the military store, and finally found it. Alas, no bomber jackets! But I found a sweet messenger bag - plain, khaki material with a black biohazard symbol emblazoned on the flap. It came home with me - I needed a new bag anyway! ^_^ We were told by the people working that Burlington Coat Factory (not to be confused with Burlington Stoat Factory) might have the jackets, so we drove back to Naperville, questing away. And we were terribly disappointed. No bomber jacket that tickled my fancy awaited us within the confines of the Factory of Coats. Dejected and almost devoid of hope, we went to Best Buy in search of a phone set for Heather's mom. Lo and behold! The mom gave us an insight - had we tried Kohl's in our quest? We had not! Encouraged, we journeyed back across New York Street and settled into the parking lot at Kohl's, gathering our energy for another charge. And we were turned away again, empty handed, with nothing but slightly sore feet and a complete lack of energy, accompanied by minor starvation, to show for our efforts. The bomber jacket, that elusive garment of attractive warmth, had eluded us yet again. We settled for visiting Fruitful Yield, my favorite health food store. We got chocolate and snacks, and were then crushed to learn that our ally, Brian, was unable to join us for further questing due to work. (He volunteered to stay late for someone who was really sick - a kind deed, typical of such a noble knight.) Heather and I dined at Fuddruckers, which seems to be where we always end up eating when Heather comes home. And we aren't sure why that is, exactly, but it's always delicious, and sounds like a great idea at the time. Re-energized by the food, she and I decided to brave the Scary Mall of Death, (also known as the Fox Valley Mall) and perhaps steal Brian away for his break time and buy him food. As we neared GameStop, Heather's eyes fixed upon the sight of Wilson's Leather store. She suggested that we try there, in our futile search for my coat. Could it hurt? Of course not. It was on the way. We walked in the door, and the angels sang - the glory of Heaven unfolded itself in a beam of light, and shone upon the surface of the very item we'd been searching for all day. And it was on sale, for less than half price. Joy! Surprise! Delight! The warm feeling of a fangirl's glow! I even infected the cashier with a bit of my happiness and enthusiasm as I paid for my purchase and bought his add-on suggestion of a leather care kit. Hell, he probably could have sold me something I never would have used, and I would have bought it gladly, I was so happy. A successful quest, and one that brought much joy, and not as much damage to my wallet as I'd feared. Huzzah! Huzzah! For leather coats and best friends! The rest of the mall trip was also enjoyable. I was able to buy Heather a J-pop CD she wanted, and a new shirt she liked from Hot Topic. And I added another Resident Evil shirt to my collection - a long-sleeved one with the Biohazard pattern, a zombie skull, and two crossed shotguns on it. I also picked up a mini-statue of Bahamut from Final Fantasy. All in all, an awsome day. I'm so glad I got to spend time with Heather, and that I finally got my bomber jacket - the exact, perfect one I'd been looking for. |
